Box Score DURHAM, N.C. – The South Carolina State softball team posted a 9-6 win over North Carolina Central on Sunday afternoon at Parkwood Field. SC State improved to 7-19 overall and 2-7 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference after winning the three-game series 2-1.
NC Central (15-22, 1-8 MEAC) led 2-0 for the first four innings of the game. The Lady Bulldogs tied the game at 2-all with an RBI groundout by
Unique Whitehurst and an RBI single by
Deanna Sullivan in the top of the fifth inning.
The Lady Eagles scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth to seemingly put the game away. Not to be outdone, however, SC State scored four runs in the sixth inning, with two runs coming on Whitehurst's home run to centerfield, to tie the game at 6-6.
In the seventh, the Lady Bulldogs scored three runs on an RBI single by Whitehurst and a two-RBI single by Sullivan. NC Central got two hits and benefitted from a Lady Bulldog error in the bottom of the frame, but SC State turned up the defense and got out of the inning with the bases loaded to seal the win.
Jada Richardson went 3-for-5 with a double for SC State, while Whitehurst was 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs. Sullivan was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two walks and
Tiara Lovejoy was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.
Kahla Caster also had two hits and scored once for the Lady Bulldogs.
Jareece Sayles was the winning pitcher. She gave up 11hits and six earned runs in seven innings.
The Lady Bulldogs head to Princess Anne, Md. to play a non-conference doubleheader against Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday at 1 p.m.
