Box Score 2 ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The South Carolina State softball team fell 6-0 and 4-3 to Gardner-Webb on Thursday afternoon at Lady Bulldog Field.
In the first game, Summer Darnell pitched a seven-inning, four-hit shutout for Gardner-Webb (11-16).
Jareece Sayles fell to 3-7 on the season after tossing four innings and allowing seven hits and four runs.
Gardner-Webb got on the board first in the second game, but the Lady Bulldogs (5-11) answered in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-all. Charmaine Oden had an RBI groundout that scored
Unique Whitehurst for SC State's first run of the day.
The Runnin' Bulldogs tacked on runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings to take a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
Jada Richardson walked to lead off the final inning and Oden followed with a single through the left side. Two outs later,
Tiara Delaney reached base on a fielding error which allowed Richardson to score.
Kabraelyn Coleman singled to center field, allowing Oden to score but Delaney got out at third base for the final out of the game.
Ashley Wark picked up the win after a pitching a complete game and giving up three runs (one earned) and four hits.
Cecily Ruiz (0-1) allowed six hits and four runs in seven innings in her first loss of the year.
The Lady Bulldogs open MEAC play this weekend with a three-game home series with North Carolina A&T. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. an Sunday's single game will start at noon.
