SC State Softball Goes 4-2 in Opening Weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The SC State softball team opened the 2015 season by going 4-2 over the weekend. The Lady Bulldogs went undefeated in Claflin's Hampton Jordan Classic on Friday and Saturday and then dropped a doubleheader at home against Alabama A&M.
 
On Friday, SC State posted wins over Benedict (8-5) and Clark Atlanta (12-2). Against Benedict, Mikala Johnson went 3-for-4 with three runs, while Jada Richardson was 1-for-3 with a homerun. Nicole Sanders and Tiara Delaney also had three hits each. Jareece Sayles picked up the win after allowing six hits and five earned runs in seven innings.
 
Richardson had a big game against Clark Atlanta, going 2-for-3 with a triple, a grand slam and six runs batted in. Khala Caster hit a homerun of her own – a two-run shot – and finished with two hits in three at bats and three RBI. Kierra Cromer was the winning pitcher after pitching five innings and giving up two hits and two earned runs, while striking out seven.
 
On Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs faced Concordia-Selma (20-2) and Virginia State (12-0). The opening game was a slugfest for the Lady Bulldogs as the scored 20 runs on 15 hits against Concordia-Selma. Sayles improved to 2-0 after a two-run, four-hit outing.
 
Cromer pitched a seven-inning shutout in the 12-0 win over Virginia State, only allowing two hits and walking one batter. Ciana Burt went 3-for-4 with three RBI, a double and three runs, while Caster was 3-for-4 with a double and Johnson was 2-for-4 with two runs and a homer.
 
In Sunday's action, the Lady Bulldogs dropped two close games to Alabama A&M, falling 5-4 in eight innings in the first game and then 4-3 in game 2. Sayles took both losses bringing her record to 2-2 on the season.
 
SC State returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 17 with a doubleheader against Gardner-Webb at Lady Bulldog Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
