Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State women's softball team avoided a MEAC series sweep, with a 3-2 victory over Bethune-Cookman Sunday at the Lady Bulldog Softball Field.
With the game tied 1-1, South Carolina State took full advantage off a RBI single to centerfield by junior Makala Johnson to score a run to give the Lady Bulldogs a 2-1 edge over the Lady Wildcats in the bottom of the third inning.
BC-U responded on a RBI single by Calesha Shelley to bring Destinee Williams home to even the score 2-2 in the top of the 7
th inning. SC State would not be denied going into extra innings as freshman
Unique Whitehurst hit a RBI double to center field to drive home the winning run by freshman
Jareece Sayles to secure the 3-2 victory in the bottom of the 8
th .
South Carolina State improves to 8-20 overall, 1-5 in the MEAC, while Bethune-Cookman falls to 15-23 overall, 5-1 in the league.
The Lady Bulldogs will return to action Saturday (April. 12) when they host the visiting Eagles of NC Central in a pivotal Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup. First pitch begins at 1 p.m., followed by Game 2 at 3 p.m. at Lady Bulldog Softball Field.
