Orangeburg, S.C. (2/7-8/14)—The SC State softball team finished 2-2 during the opening weekend of the 2014 season. The Lady Bulldogs, who participated in the 2014 Hampton Jordan Classic hosted by Claflin University, went 1-1 on day one of the tournament and finished 1-1 on day two.

SC State (2-2) opened the tournament with a 7-5 victory over Alabama A&M. After falling behind 5-4 by the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Bulldogs put up six runs in the bottom of the sixth and held the Bulldogs of A&M scoreless over two innings to take the 7-5 lead.  Alabama A&M could not score in its half the seventh inning, thus securing the victory for SC State.  SC State recorded eight hits, including a homerun by senior Kelsey Grochow with just one error for the game.

The Lady Bulldogs could not get any offense going in game two on the day, as they fell to Georgia Southwestern, 9-1.  The Canes put up their nine runs off nine hits and three SC State errors, all while holding the Lady Bulldogs hitless for the game.  Grochow scored SC State's lone run off a fielder's choice by redshirt junior Kourtney Paulo in the top of the third inning.

SC State opened the second day of competition with a 4-2 loss to Limestone.  After heading into the top of the sixth with a 0-0 score, the Lady Bulldogs put up two runs off two hits in the sixth.  SC State got runs from sophomore Jazmin Robinson, who pinch ran for senior Tiffany Harris, and freshman Jasmine Harris.  Limestone quickly countered as they put up four runs off five hits in the bottom of the sixth to take the 4-2 lead.  Despite placing their first two runners on base via hits to start the top of the seventh, the Lady Bulldogs could not capitalize, leaving a runner stranded on second, thus falling by the two point margin.

The final game of the tournament saw SC State come from behind to defeat St. Augustine's by three, 7-4.  The teams were scoreless heading into the top of the third, when the Falcons put up four runs off three hits.  The Lady Bulldog started to chip away at the lead as they put up one run in their half of the third to cut the deficit to three, 1-4.  SC State put up one run in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the six, and held St. Augustine's scoreless over the three innings en route to the 7-4 advantage.  The Falcons could not score in the top of the seventh, giving the Lady Bulldogs the three-point victory.

SC State will travel to Buies Creek, N.C. Wednesday, Feb. 12 to take on Gardner-Webb University.  The Lady Bulldogs will open their 2014 home season on Sunday, Feb. 16 when they host Anderson University in a 1 p.m. double-header.  All SC State home games will be played at the Lady Bulldogs softball field on the campus of SC State.
