SC State Softball Wins 2013 Opening Conference Series, 2-1, Over NC A&T

Orangeburg, S.C. (March 29-30)—The SC State women's softball team won its 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series opener with North Carolina A&T, 2-1.  On Friday (March 29) the Lady Bulldogs won the opening game, 6-4 and dropped the middle contest, 9-0.  SC State won the rubber contest, 5-0, on Saturday (March 30) to capture the series.

In Game One of Friday's double-header, SC State (13-13, 2-1 MEAC) controlled the contest for the first six innings.  The Lady Bulldogs put up four-of-its six runs in the first two innings of the ball game.  After freshman Jasmine Greer reached base via a walk in inning one, sophomore Mikala Johnson hit a double down the leftfield line to bring in Greer for the team's first run of the contest.  SC State's leadoff batter in the second inning (Jazmin Robinson) reached base via error and subsequently scored the Lady Bulldogs third run off a double by senior Taylor-Anne Harris.  SC State put up two additional runs in the bottom of the second to move ahead 4-0.  Neither team would score over the next two innings then the Lady Bulldogs got runs from senior Kandyce Ranew and freshman Jazmin Robinson in the bottom of the fifth inning, to take the 6-0 lead.  NC A&T (3-21, 1-2 MEAC) bats came to life in the final two innings.  The Lady Aggies scored one run off one hit and one SC State error in the top of the fifth for its first run of the contest.  NC A&T continued to rally late as they put up three runs off two hits and two Lady Bulldog errors in the top of the seventh to close the gap to 4-6 but could not get any closer, falling in Game One by the two run margin.

Game Two of the double-header belonged solely to NC A&T.  After neither team managed to score over the first two innings, the Lady Aggies put up six runs off four hits and one SC State error to take the commanding 6-0 lead.  The Lady Aggies scored one additional run in the fourth and two in the fifth while holding the Lady Bulldogs scoreless en route to the 9-0 Game Two victory in five innings.

The Lady Bulldogs rebounded in Game Three of the series, defeating NC A&T, 5-0, on Saturday.  SC State wasted no time setting the tone for the game as they put up two runs in the first and three runs in the second while holding NC A&T scoreless.  The Lady Aggies played solid defense throughout the remainder of the game but could not get their offense going.  NC A&T managed just two hits for the game.

Junior Pitcher Vianney Gomez continued to play solid for SC State over the weekend, as she picked up the victories in both games for Lady Bulldogs.  Freshman Jazmin Robinson was the losing pitcher in Game Two of the series.

NC A&T used three pitchers over the weekend with Shelby Snyder winning Game Two.  Ashira Dobison and Janika May were the loser's in Game One and Three, respectively.

SC State will look travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., next weekend (Saturday-Sunday, April 6-7) to face Bethune-Cookman it a MEAC three-game series.  The Lady Bulldogs will then host neighboring Claflin University on Wednesday, April 10 with first pitch of the double-header set for 1 p.m.
