SC State Women’s Softball Set to Open Its 2013 Season

Orangeburg, SC – The South Carolina State women's softball team will open its 2013 season this weekend when they participate in the 2013 Hampton Jordan Classic hosted by neighboring Claflin University. The tournament, which is set for Friday-Saturday, Feb. 8-9, will feature a total of 10 teams and will be played at the Hillcrest and Peasley Fields in Orangeburg, S.C.

SC State, who concluded the 2012 season with a 14-29 overall record and 3-12 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), will open up against Kentucky State on Friday at 9 a.m. at Hillcrest Field. The Lady Bulldogs will then face Winston-Salem State at 1 p.m. at Hillcrest and Clark-Atlanta at 5 p.m. on Friday at Peasley Field. On Saturday, SC State will face Brenau at Peasley Field at 9 a.m. and will close the tournament against Brewton Parker at 5 p.m. at Hillcrest Field.

“I am excited about the upcoming season and the new look of our team,” said second year head coach Tonja Braxton. “Pre-season practices have been pretty good, very spirited and a lot of sweat.”

This year's team will have a combination of old and new with seven returning players and nine newcomers. “We had a large recruiting class that will provide us some weapons that we didn't have a year ago, with the biggest improvement being the battery,” says Braxton. “The thought of playing a three-game series and not having to rely on one pitcher for the entire series will afford a distinct advantage.” Braxton continued, “We will look to our returners to set the tone for the team; of the nine starters, seven are returners from 2012 so with a veteran defensive team will allow the freshman/newcomers an opportunity to really develop for the future.”

SC State will open its home season with three straight contest beginning Sunday, Feb. 10 when they host Howard in a non-conference single game at 11 a.m. The Lady Bulldogs will then host Anderson (Feb. 12) and Benedict (Feb. 15) in double-header matchups. First pitch for both games is set for 1 p.m. All home contests will be played at the Lady Bulldogs Softball Field on the campus of SC State.
