Orangeburg, S.C.—SC State had 10 hits as they defeated Howard, 6-4, in their 2013 season home-opener. With the win the Lady Bulldogs improved to 5-1 overall.
Howard put up one run in the top of the first inning to take the advantage to start the game. After going scoreless in the bottom of the first, Kourtney Paulo hit a two run double to give the Lady Bulldogs the 2-1 lead. The Lady Bulldogs put up two additional runs in the bottom of the second to take the 4-2 advantage. SC State put up one run in the third and one in the sixth to push its lead to 6-1 heading into the seventh. Howard bats came to life in the top of the seventh. The Lady Bison put up three runs to cut the deficit to two, 6-4, but could not get any closer.
Taylor-Anne Harris and sophomore Mikala Johnson led the team offensively with two hits each. The Lady Bulldogs received runs from Cianna Burt, LaTavia Riley, Shannon Baity, Vianney Gomez, Kourtney Paulo and Harris en route to the victory.
SC State will return to action this Tuesday, Feb. 12 when they host Anderson in a non-conference double-header. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Lady Bulldog Softball Field on the campus of SC State.
