SC State Sweeps Neighboring Claflin in Non-Conference Softball Double-header

Orangeburg, S.C.—Freshman Mikala Johnson hit two homeruns on the day as SC State sweeps neighboring Claflin in a non-conference doubleheader.  The homeruns by Johnson were the first her collegiate career.

In Game One, SC State (6-3) allowed just four hits in seven innings en route to an 8-0 shutout over Claflin.  The Lady Bulldogs, who placed its first four-of-five batters on base, scored runs in the second, third, fifth and seventh innings.  The Lady Bulldogs picked up three runs in the second, two runs in the third and seventh, and one in the fifth inning.  Freshman Mikala Johnson led the attack in Game One for the Lady Bulldogs as she went 3-of-3 including her first collegiate homerun.

SC State jump out to an early lead in the Game Two as they put up three runs in the top of the first.  Claflin (4-3) had a little offense of their own as they put up two runs off two hits in the bottom of the second.  Johnson led off the third inning with a homerun, her second on the day that gave the Lady Bulldogs the 4-2 lead.  Claflin scored one run in the bottom of the fourth to once again pull within one.  SC State scored two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh as they defeated Claflin in Game Two, 7-3.

For the day, Johnson finished 4-of-7 with three runs.  Kandyce Ranew went 5-of-8 with two runs for the SC State.  Sophomore Vianney Gomez was solid on the mound for the Lady Bulldogs as she gave up only one run in 11 2/3 innings while picking up the win in Game One and the save in Game Two.

SC State will return to action this Thursday, Feb. 23 when they host Benedict College at the newly renovated Lady Bulldog Field.  First pitch for Thursday's contest is set for 2 p.m. following the unveiling of the renovations of the Lady Bulldog Field.  The unveiling is set for 1:30 p.m.
