SC STATE WOMEN WIN 67-51 OVER BOB JONES

Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC – Senior guard Kemoni Jenkins had 17 points to lead four South Carolina State players in double figures as the Lady Bulldogs downed visiting Bob Jones University 67-51 Monday night. Jakayvea Akins, also a senior guard, contributed 13 points, junior Taylor Brown came off the bench for 12 and Rhein Beamon, another senior, chipped in 10.

Coach Audra Smith's team, which had split its last two outings, improved to 4-5 on the season. The Lady Bulldogs enjoyed a huge 45-26 edge in rebounds, with Taylor, Beamon and Dashanique Peterson all grabbing seven boards each.

Taylor, who was returning after missing several games, gave the Lady Bulldogs big lift and also celebrated her Tuesday 21st birthday by sharing cake and cup cakes with her twin brother, parents and teammates after the game.

Bob Jones, which dropped to 4-8, had only one player in double figures – junior Madison Shupe, with 16 on 6-8 shooting, including a 4-6 effort from three-point range. Delaney Edwards add nine points, while Kylee Leffew, Sarah Thomsen and Sydney Bedsaul contributed seven points each. Thomsen led the Bruins on the boards with nine rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs, coming off a 58-50 home loss to Winthrop on Saturday, took control early; weathered a Bob Jones rally in the third period before pulling away late in the third in earning the victory.

"We needed an easy win," said Smith, whose team has played three games in five days. "We have played a lot of games in a short time and we are tired after playing on Saturday. But this win is good for us as it is little difficult for us at this time since its final exams have started.

"We got Voorhees on Thursday and UNLV on Saturday (both at home) and then we get a good little break and we welcome it."

The Lady Bulldogs led 19-10 after one and were ahead 34-19 at the break. But the visitors scored eight of the first 11 points to start the third stanza to slice the margin to 37-27 when Leffew connected on one of two from the line with 4:00 left in the period.

Brown completed a three-point play the old fashion way with 2:44 on the third-period clock to ignite a 10-0 run that put the host up by 20 at 47-27 when reserve Chrisiana Scott nailed a 3-pointer at the 42.7 mark. Edwards got inside for a basket for the Bruins to make it 47-29 after three.

An Akins basket to start the final period matched the hosts' biggest lead of 20 points -- 49-29 – before Shupe had three of her baskets from behind the arc during a 9-2 run by Bob Jones that closed the gap to 51-38 with 8:10 showing.

Following a timeout by SC State, Smith's team scored seven straight points to regain its 20-point margin at 58-38 and the closed Bob Jones came after that was the final margin.

The Lady Bulldogs host Voorhees Thursday in an intrastate double header which gets underway at 5:30 p.m.

"Voorhees is a much more athletic team than Bob Jones so we expect a much tougher game on Thursday," Smith said.
