Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's soccer team defeated South Carolina State 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium. Six Lady Bulldogs were recognized prior to the start of the match in the Senior Day Ceremony.
The match was evenly played for most of the first half, with each team displaying a high level of intensity in the opening period. UTRGV (7-2-1), coached by former Lady Bulldog head soccer coach Glad Bugariu, scored in the 38
th minute to take a 1-0 lead right before halftime.
The intensity continued into the second half and the level of play eventually got more physical. SC State (2-8-1) picked up four straight fouls in the first 10 minutes of the second period. In the 63
rd minute, senior
Mary Pierce's first goal of the season tied the match at 1-all.
After each team committed one foul apiece, UTRGV took the lead on a goal by Frida Farastad-Eriksson in the 71
st minute. Four yellow cards were issued between the 74
th and 76
th minutes, with three of them going to SC State players.
UTRGV tacked on one more goal in the 82
nd minute to seal the win and deny the Lady Bulldog seniors a win in their final contest at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
Senior
Marissa Horton took a team-high two shots (both on goal) and had one assist. Senior
Alexandra Kidd and sophomore
Cortney Welch also took one shot each for the Lady Bulldogs. Junior
Mahogany Fisher made her first appearance in goal for the season, allowing three goals while saving 11 shots in 90 minutes.
The Lady Bulldogs hit the road for a five-match swing to close out the season. Their first stop is at Elon University in Elon, N.C. for a 7 p.m. match on Thursday. Both live stats and a video stream of the match are available at
