Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Freshman JaQuanna Murray had 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks to lead the South Carolina State women's basketball team to a 75-52 win over visiting Southern Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
Senior Amber Howard came off the bench for 12 points, including a 3-for-5 effort from 3-point range, and Jasmine Coleman, another senior, added 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in the Lady Bulldog victory, which snapped a two-game losing streak. Coach Doug Robertson's team improved to 5-7 on the season, while the Lady Warriors fell to 4-7 with the loss.
Southern Wesleyan was paced by Chelsie Waters – the only Lady Warrior in double figures -- with 11 points. Aneysa Williams and Shelby Gilbert added eight points each and Noelle van Zadelhoff contributed six points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Lady Bulldogs, ahead 38-29 at the half, saw their lead evaporate midway the third period when Waters sparked a 13-0 Southern Wesleyan run that turned a 43-31 deficit with 7:53 left in the period into a 44-43 advantage on a three-point play by Waters with 5:30 on the third period clock.
SC State responded with a 10-1 run to build a 53-45 lead at the end of the period, then took control in the final stanza, which the Lady Bulldogs began with a 19-3 spree to build a comfortable 71-48 advantage on Howard's inside basket with just 3:38 left.
SC State, which enjoyed a 55-34 edge on the glass, led 20-16 after the opening period, which featured three ties, the last at 12-all with 5:30 on the first-quarter clock.
The Lady Bulldogs resume MEAC play on Saturday when they host the Eales of North Carolina Central in a 2 p.m. matchup.
