Box Score EDINBURG, Tex. – The South Carolina State women's soccer team lost a hard-fought match to Incarnate Word on Sunday afternoon in the final day of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Tournament. SC State (1-1) fell 1-0 in overtime and finished second overall in the tournament.
Rhea-Anne Currie,
Valery Fernandez-Davila, and
Tierra Pullard were named to the all-tournament team. Pullard led all players in the tournament with seven points.
"I am extremely proud of this young team for how well they played this weekend," head coach Sandy Burris said. "The overall team effort was outstanding. Individually, everyone played an important role and made an impact in each game. The heart and character of the team was displayed this weekend and I am excited about the future of SC State women's soccer. Finally, I'd like to thank the coaches at UTRGV for including us in this tournament and for their hospitality."
After a scoreless 90 minutes of play, and extra period was forced. Incarnate Word (2-0) scored three minutes into overtime to win the match.
Senior goalkeeper
Haley Austin fell to 1-1 on the season, but had a season-high 14 saves, including two breakaway saves, after spending 93 minutes and 36 seconds in goal. "Hailey's senior leadership as a captain was displayed today through her control and composure during the match," Burris said.
SC State's next match is on Wednesday, September 2 at 7 p.m. at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C.
