BALTIMORE, Md. – A three-point play by
Jazzmine Johnson with 9:32 left in the game broke a 53-all tie and the SC State women's basketball team outscored Coppin State 15-5 in the final nine minutes to secure a 68-58 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win on Saturday at the Physical Education Center.
The Lady Bulldogs improve to 13-8 overall and 6-4 in conference play. Coppin State falls to 3-17, 2-7.
The Lady Eagles led for most of the game and went into halftime with an eight-point lead, 41-33.
SC State got out to a fast start in the second half and scored six straight points to cut the lead to two, 41-39. Coppin State then went on a 9-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Amber Griffin to take a 48-39 lead with 14:51 left in the game.
The Lady Bulldogs cut it to two twice more, the final time coming on a layup by Johnson at the 10:17 mark. Her bucket and free throw 45 seconds later put SC State ahead for good. Coppin State went scoreless for the final 7:14 of the game.
Jordan Swails led the Lady Eagles with 17 points, while Griffin and Bria Harris finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Harris led the defense with eight boards.
Kourtney Williams had a game-high 25 points. Johnson tallied 15 points and three rebounds and
Amber Howard had 11 points.
Jasmine Coleman set a new career high with 13 points, matched her career-best with four blocks and had a game-high nine rebounds.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Monday against Morgan State. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
