Greg Mortimer shot 7-of-10 from the field and 3-of-3 from behind the arc to score a game-high 21 points to lead South Carolina State to a 79-67 road victory of Florida A&M Saturday (Dec.5) at the Al Lawton Center.
"It was a big road win tonight, because in this league road wins are hard to come by," said Bulldog head coach
Murray Garvin. "I am really proud of our players and coaching staff the way we battled back to come away with the win."
JUCO transfer
Eric Eaves had another hot shooting night hitting 6-of-9 from the field and 8-of-11 from the charity stripe to finish with 20 points.
The Bulldogs improve to 4-4 overall, 1-0 in the MEAC, while FAMU falls to 3-6 overall, 0-1 in the league.
SC State shot 55% (5-of-9) from three-point range and 53% (28-of-52) from the field, while outrebounding the Rattlers 36-33.
The Bulldogs got off to a slow start, while FAMU took a 37-32 lead during halftime.
Sophomore forward
Tashombe Riley was the surprise of the night rallying off 12 second-half points along with seven (7) rebounds to give the Bulldogs a 10-point lead 71-61 with less than 1:47 remaining in regulation.
A Riley jumper followed by three-pointer by Mortimer gave the Bulldogs their largest lead of the night 14, 75-61 to seal the victory.
Senior guard/forward
Gabriel McCray added 11 points, while sophomore guard
Ed Stephens added eight.
FAMU had four players that finished in double-figures with Francois Lewis leading the way with 18. Malcolm Bernard and Treavann Warren each had 12, while K'Ja Johnson finished with 11 in the loss.
Garvin stated, "We will enjoy this win for a little while then it's on to the next in facing a tough Bethune-Cookman team on Monday."
South Carolina State returns to action on Monday (Dec. 7) when they take on the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman in a pivotal Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) showdown. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
