Eric Eaves scored a game-high 25 points to lead South Carolina State to an easy 113-69 victory of Voorhees College Monday (Nov. 16) at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
The Bulldogs had four players in double figures with Eaves leading the way, followed by senior guard
Gabriel McCray with 17 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore sensation
Ed Stephens tossed in 15, while Preseason All-MEAC Third Team selection junior guard
Greg Mortimer added 13 points and six (6) assists in the win.
"It's good to get a win in your home-opener in front of a great crowd," said SC State head coach
Murray Garvin. "The guys came out and played really hard on both ends of the floor."
South Carolina State (1-1) shot 53 percent from the field, including a 60 percent clip in the second half when they tallied 61 points.
SC State dominated in several categories leading the way in rebounding (33-26), assist (19), and turnovers SC State (8) and Voorhees (18) on the night. The Bulldogs turned 18 turnovers into 28 points and scored 44 points in the paint.
Voorhees was led by Desmond Lewis with 17 points and Marcus Walker finished with 14 in the loss.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 20-point advantage, 47-27, off a dunk by Eaves with 3:32 remaining in the first-half. The Tigers cut the lead to 14, 51-37, off a layup by Desmond Louis with 0:17 seconds remaining in the half. SC State closed out the half leading 52-37.
The second-half belong to the Bulldogs opening up a 37-point lead with Stephens nailing back-to-back 3-pointers to give SC State an commanding 99-62 lead with 4:11 remaining in the game. A power dunk and foul by senior power forward
Luka Radovic with under 2:17 left sealed the 44-point victory for the Bulldogs.
Radovic finished with nine points and six rebounds. Other Bulldogs making an impact were senior forward
Daryll Palmer and sophomore guard Ty Solomon with eight points each and sophomore forward
Tashombe Riley with nine points.
South Carolina State returns to action on this weekend when they participate in the EKU Classic in Richmond, KY. The Bulldogs will tip-off against Longwood University on Friday (Nov. 20) in an 8:30 p.m. start, followed by Eastern Kentucky on Saturday (Nov. 21) at 2 p.m. and Ball State Sunday (Nov. 22) in a 4:30 p.m. showdown.
