Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Hampton's Malia Tate-Defreitas tossed in 37 points as the visiting Lady Pirates handed South Carolina State its worst loss of the season, 88-53, Monday in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest.
Jazzmine Johnson had 14 points and
Amber Howard 11 for the host Lady Bulldogs in a lackluster effort. SC State's leading scorer
Kourtney Williams (16.4 ppg), who had 37 points in a 79-75 win over Norfolk State on Saturday, was limited to just 10 points on 3-of-12 attempts from the field.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Coach Doug Robertson's Lady Bulldogs who fell to 11-8 overall and 4-4 in the league.
Hampton, meanwhile, rebounded from its only MEAC loss – 61-55 at Savannah State Saturday – to climb 10-10 overall and 6-1 in the league.
The Lady Pirates dominated SC State in every phase of the game, according to SC State's Robertson, who saw his team lose the rebounding battle 54-30 and make just 19 total field goals to 32 for the visitors. Hampton also had twice as many assists – 18 to 9 – as SC State and committed just seven turnovers to 19 for the Lady Bulldogs.
"We were outhustled from the beginning," Robertson said. "They shot the ball really well and controlled the boards on both ends but were very dominant on the offensive glass. We didn't attack the boards on the defensive end and it showed."
The Lady Pirates built a 37-22 lead at the half and were never really threatened after that. The closest SC State came after that was 12 points, 49-37, on a jumper by Williams with 14:15 left. Hampton's biggest lead was the final margin.
Hampton outrebounded SC State 33-16 in the first half, with 19 coming on the offensive end before ending with its 54-30 advantage for the game. Of the 30 total rebounds grabbed by the Lady Bulldogs, only eight came on the offensive end.
Both Ryan Jordan and Brielle Ward had 12 rebounds each for the Lady Pirates. Jordan and Kyani White joined Tate-DeFreitas in double figures on the scoring end with 22 and 12 points, respectively.
Toni Grier had five boards and
Jasmine Coleman four to lead SC State, which returns to the court Saturday against Delaware State in the first game of a MEAC doubleheader, beginning at 4 p.m.
