Pierce, Brown Lead SC State to 2-1 Win over Mt. Olive College

Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Senior defender Breia Pierce and senior midfielder Dominique Brown scored a goal apiece to lead the South Carolina State women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Mt. College on Wednesday night at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium. It was the first goal of the season for each of them.

After a scoreless first half, SC State (1-1) got on the board when Pierce found the back of the net on a penalty kick by Brown at the 65:17 mark. The Lady Bulldogs turned up the defense and kept the Trojans scoreless for the next 16 minutes, but Ellie Barnes was able to score at the 81:50 mark to tie the game at 1-all.

With just 1:02 left in the game, Brown scored the unassisted game-winner to put SC State up for good. Mt. Olive tried desperately to score in the final minute, but was unable to overcome the Lady Bulldog defense.

"I am very proud of our girls", head coach Sandra Burris said. "Missing as many players as we were, tonight's win was definitely a team effort. Mt Olive did a good job of putting us under in the second half, but we were able to make adjustments and get the win."

Brown took five shots (three on goal) to go with her one score and assist. Pierce took three shots and scored once.

The Lady Bulldogs travel to Charleston, S.C. to take part in the Charleston Southern Tournament this weekend. SC State plays The Citadel at 4 p.m. on Friday and takes on host Charleston Southern at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
