Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC – Visiting North Carolina A&T built a 33-21 lead at the break, then outscored South Carolina 40-28 in the second half in handing the host a 73-49 setback in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest Monday.
The loss was the second in a row and the seventh in eight outings for SC State, which got 11 points from
Mykala Jones and 10 from
Kourtney Williams in the loss. Ci Ci Goodwin and
Cherisha Floyd had six rebounds each to lead Coach Doug Robertson's team on the boards.
The Lady Aggies, who won their sixth in a row and their ninth in their last 10 games, were paced by Tracy King with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Ariel Bursey added 16 points in the win.
NC A&T, which trails on Hampton in the MEAC standings, took control early, building a 16-8 lead when King nailed two free throws with 12:30 left on the first period clock. A 7-2 by SC State closed the gap to 18-17 at the 6:51 mark but the Lady Aggies scored 12 of the next 14 points to go ahead 30-19 with 3:17 on the first-period clock. The lead was 33-21 at the break. NC A&T used a 24-16 run in the first 12 minutes of the final half to build a 57-37 cushion when King made a layup and completed a three-point play after being fouled with 7:46 remaining. T
he closest SC State came after that was 18 points twice, the last time at 63-45 at the 5:10 mark. The Lady Aggies' biggest lead was 24, the final margin. The Lady Aggies made 50 percent (25-50) of their shots from the field and enjoyed a 39-30 edge on the boards.
SC State made just 36.4 percent (20-55) of its attempts from the field. The Lady Bulldogs did enjoy one advantage over the visitors – a 20-12 edge in benching scoring.
Robertson's team closes out its home schedule Saturday when it hosts Savannah State in the first game of an MEAC doubleheader, beginning at 4 p.m. It will be Senior Night for the Lady Bulldogs. --30--
