Kourtney Williams had a game-high 18 points, 12 in the second half, and teammate
Jazzmine Johnson chipped in 16 points to lead the South Carolina State women's basketball team to a 59-53 overtime win over Wofford College on Tuesday night at the Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Wofford (1-5) led 48-46 after one of two free throws by Chanel Stokes with 2:03 left in regulation. Johnson drained a 3-pointer at the 1:07 mark to give SC State (4-1) a one-point lead (49-48). The Terriers had a chance to seal the win on free throws by Kentra Washington, but she only made the first of two, forcing the extra period.
Amber Howard and
Mallory Stone scored two quick buckets for the Lady Bulldogs to give them a four-point lead (53-49) in overtime. Wofford could only muster up four points in the final 2:34 to take their fifth loss of the season.
The game was close from the beginning with no team leading by more than seven points in the first half. Wofford had a one-point lead (23-22) after a jumper by Jordan Frazier with 1:19 left in the opening period. But Johnson hit a jumper in the paint to put SC State up 24-23 right before halftime.
The Lady Bulldogs scored 10 straight points to start the second half and led 33-23 at the 17:53 mark. Not to be outdone, the Terriers then went on a 10-0 run of their own to tie the game at 33-all. They then went on a 14-3 run behind the hot shooting of Maria Corella who scored 11 of those points.
SC State steadily chipped away at the Wofford's lead and got ahead by one on Johnson's 3-pointer just before the end of regulation.
The Terriers shot 34.5 percent (19-of-55) for the game and outrebounded the Lady Bulldogs 45-36. Frazier had a team-high 16 points, Corella finished with 15 points and Washington had 11. Ashton Fleming had a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Lady Bulldogs made 20 of their 55 shot attempts (36.4 percent), had 14 steals and blocked a season-high-tying four shots.
Brittany Drumgoole also scored in double-figures with 10 points.
Persephone Goodwin led all players with three blocks and added two points and three boards.
SC State returns to the S-H-M Memorial Center to take on Florida A&M at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
