Amber Howard scored a career-high 25 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, including 7-of-9 from the 3-point line, to lead the South Carolina State women's basketball team to a 69-62 win over Alabama A&M (0-8) on Sunday afternoon at the S-H-M Memorial Center. Howard was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line and added three rebounds and two steals in 29 minutes.
SC State (6-3) led by seven (20-13) late in the first half after a jumper by
Kourtney Williams at the 9:15 mark. But Alabama A&M went on a 6-0 run to take a 22-20 lead on a 3-point play by Alganese Gatson with 7:11 left in the opening period.
SC State forced the fourth tie of the half on a layup by Williams to knot things up at 33-all. A pair of free throws by
Jazzmine Johnson with 41 seconds left gave SC State a 35-33 advantage going into halftime.
Howard drained a trey to open the second half and put SC State up 38-33 at the 19:22 mark. Johnson followed with a bucket 1:37 later to push the lead to seven.
Not to be outdone, Alabama A&M went on another run, tying the game at 40-all on a free throw by Janie Myles with 15:48 remaining in the game. A 3-point play by Johnson put SC State back up by two, 42-40, with 15:21 left.
SC State held the lead until Jaylan Snowden scored on a fast-break layup to bring the score to 61-all with 9:20 left on the clock. Myles scored five straight points for Alabama A&M to give her team a 56-51 lead.
But Howard's hot shooting kept SC State in contention and gave the Lady Bulldogs a 62-60 lead with 2:45 left in the game. SC State outscored Alabama A&M 7-2 in the final two minutes to seal the win.
Myles led Alabama A&M with 25 points and nine rebounds. Gatson also scored in double figures with 11 points.
For SC State, Williams had double-digits points with 10 and she passed out six assists. The Lady Bulldogs blocked a season-high eight shots with four going to
Jasmine Coleman and three for
Persephone Goodwin.
SC State hosts Jacksonville State at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Admission is free and open to the public.
