SC State Women Fall to B-CU 71-53

Poor Shooting, Rebounding Doom Lady Bulldogs

Dayshaun Richbow had 10 points and five rebounds
Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC -- South Carolina State found poor shooting and a big disadvantage on the boards too much to overcome Monday night in a 71-53 loss to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe Bethune-Cookman.

Kourtney Williams had 12 points -- six under her average -- and Cabriel Duren and DayShaun Richbow 10 each for Coach Doug Robertson's team, which made just 34.9 percent (22-63) of its shots from the field, including an anemic 28.1 percent (9-32) in the final half. SC State was outrebound 43-31 by B-CU, which came into the game with just one MEAC win in five tries.

The Lady Bulldogs fell to 5-10 on the season and 3-2 in the league with the loss.

Chastity Rene' Taylor had 20 points to lead three Lady Wildcats in double figures in the victory, which lifted the visitors to 5-13 overall and 2-4 in the MEAC. Kailyn Williams added 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds and Shakeyia Colyer contributed 14 points and eight boards for B-CU.

The Lady Wildcats connected on 48.2 percent (27-56) of their shots from the field and made 6-15 shots from three-point range (40 percent). They also more than doubled the assists total for the Lady Bulldogs with a 13-6 advantage.

"It's a disappointing loss," said Robertson after the game. "They outplayed us in just about every facet of the game. It seems these Monday games are trap games for us. We won on Saturday -- against Morgan last week and then lost to Coppin the following Monday. This time, we beat Florida A&M this past Saturday and then came out flat tonight. This is something we have to work on."

Ahead 36-28 at the half, the visitors started the final stanza with an 8-2 run to go ahead 44-30 on a follow shot by Williams with 14:25 to play. The Lady Bulldogs got the next four points on a jumper by Mykala Jones and a Richbow layup after a steal to close the gap to 44-34 at the 13:37 mark before B-CU used a 20-12 run that proved to be decisive in building a 64-46 edge with 5:07 to play. The closest SC State came after that was 17 points with 4:12 showing. The Lady Wildcats built their biggest lead, 69-47, on a Taylor drive with 1:47 remaining.

B-CU played without head coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis, who did not make the trip due to maternity-related reasons. Associate head coach James Howard filled in for her.

SC State resumes its schedule Saturday when the Lady Bulldogs host Norfolk State in the first game of an MEAC doubleheader, beginning at 4 p.m.
