Lady Bulldogs Open Play in MEAC Tourney Monday

Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC – Senior guard Ashley Clarke led four South Carolina State players in double figures with 21 points to power the Lady Bulldogs to a 72-56 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win Thursday night in the regular-season finale for both teams.

SC State , fourth in the final MEAC standings, opens play in the league's postseason tournament Monday at The Scope in Norfolk, VA against Savannah State, the 13-seed Tip off is 11 a.m.

Also in double figures for Coach Doug Robertson's squad were Tiara Knotts , another senior, with 15 points, sophomore Kourtney Williams with 14 and senior center Fannie Goodwin with 11, along with a game-high eight rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs, who are enjoying their first winning season in 11 years, improved to 19-8 overall and 11-5 in the MEAC. The 19 wins are the most for an SC State women's team since the 1990-91 campaign when the Lady Bulldogs were 20-12 under Lyman Foster.

The visiting Lady Hornets were led by Tierra Hawkins with 18 points, 14 in the opening half, and seven rebounds. She was the only player in double figures for Delaware State, which finished the regular season 9-20 and 6-10 in the MEAC.

SC State scored the first basket of the game on a jumper by Williams, but the Lady Hornets scored the next 10 points – four by Hawkins – to build a 10-2 lead at the 16:59 mark of the first half. A 14-6 run by the Lady Bulldogs earned them a 16-all deadlock when Clarke nailed a 3-pointer with 12:24 showing. A 3-pointer by Knotts at the 11:45 mark put the host ahead 19-16.

There were one tie and two lead changes before SC State closed out the half with a 10-4 run to take a 37-31 cushion to the lockerroom.

The Lady Bulldogs started the final half with eight straight points to build a 45-31 advantage on a follow shot by Williams with 17:49 to play. The Lady Hornets closed the gap to 10 points – 49-39 on an inside basket by Hawkins with 13:58 showing but could get no closer.
