Lady Bulldogs Fall Short 69-65 to BC-U

Senior forward Tracey Flowers finished with a team-high 15 points on the night.
Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs dropped a much needed MEAC contest to the LadyWildcats of Bethune-Cookman, 69-65, Saturday at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
      SC State falls to 11-12 overall, 6-6 in the MEAC, while Bethune-Cookman improves to 8-16 overall, 5-7 in the league.
Senior guard Demetria Frank led BC-C with 20 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore forward Kayla Crawford grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and added nine points in the victory.
       SC State had four players in double figures with senior forward Tracey Flowers leading the way with 15 points and five rebounds, teammate junior guard Trinese Foxx chipped in 12. Junior Tiara Knotts added 11 and guard Lauren Johnson chipped in 10 in the loss.
        “We had good guard play in the first half but after that things just kind of got away from us,” said SC State assistant coach Tamisha Augustin.
       Augustin fielded questions for the media in replace of head coach Doug Robertson, Jr.
      SC State led majority of the first half jumping out to a six point lead, 18-12, off a layup by junior guard Tiara Knotts at the 7:17 mark. BC-U cut the lead to one, 24-23, on a driving layup plus the foul on sophomore forward Kayla Crawford with 2:20 left in the half.
         The Lady Bulldogs sparked a 9-0 run off a 3-pointer by guard Lauren Johnson, followed by a layup by freshman Kourtney Williams to close out the first half with a 10-point lead advantage, 33-23.
        Sophomore forward Sharnese Neal closed the gap to within five, 41-36, for Bethune-Cookman nailing a 3-pointer at the 15:21 mark. A pair of free-throws by Jasmine Elum cut the lead to one, 55-54, with 5:11 left.
        Frank's jumper with 1:50 left in regulation gave the Lady Wildcats a six point lead, 64-58. Bethune-Cookman held on to defeat SC State 69-65.
        Augustine stated, “We need to clean up on our turnovers and continue to keep playing good basketball down the stretch.”
         SC State had a costly 17 turnovers and was out rebounded 41-31 by Bethune-Cookman on the day.
         The Lady Bulldogs will return to action on Monday when they host FAMU in a pivotal Mid-Eastern Athletic showdown. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.
