SC State Defeats NC A&T, 71-68, in a Women’s Basketball Conference Game

Lady Bulldogs Wins Second Straight MEAC Contest

Greensboro, N.C.—Tiara Knotts scored 12 of her team-high 18 points in the first half as SC State defeated North Carolina A&T, 71-68, to pick up its second straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win.  The victory marks the first time since the 2005-06 season that the Lady Bulldogs have defeated the Lady Aggies at the Corbett Sports Center.

SC State (10-11, 5-5 MEAC) began the game very aggressive, opening the game on a 13-0 run.  The Lady Bulldogs increased its lead to 15, 18-33, with 7:36, before NC A&T (10-14, 5-6 MEAC) began to make their run.  The Lady Aggies held SC State scoreless for a little under five minutes while using a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to eight, 27-35, with 2:15 remaining in the half.  The teams exchanged baskets over the next two minutes with the Lady Bulldogs enjoyed an eight-point halftime lead (38-30).

NC A&T turned up its intensity to start the second half.  The Lady Aggies used a 7-0 run to start the half and cut SC State's eight point halftime lead to one, 38-37.  The Lady Bulldogs then regained the momentum as they used a 13-0 run of its own to take the 51-37 advantage with 13:40 remaining in the contest.  SC State increased its lead to 20, 59-39, with 11 minutes remaining before the Lady Aggies once again turned on the heat.  NC A&T used a 16-0 run to slice the lead to five, 59-54, with just over seven minutes remaining.  The Lady Aggies managed to stay within seven points over the next five minutes and pulled within one with 22 seconds remaining in the contest but could not get any closer.  The Lady Bulldogs scored its final two points at the free-throw line en route to the three-point victory, 68-71.

The Lady Bulldogs had four players in all too record double-digit points.  In addition to Knotts, Trinese Fox scored 16, Cabriel Duren contributed 14 and Paris Alston added 11 in the game. Tiana Hemphill pulled in a team-high 12 rebounds for SC State in victory.

Tiffanie Adair recorded a double-double, 27 points-15 rebounds, for the NC A&T in the loss.

SC State will travel to Durham, N.C. on Monday (Feb. 13) to take on the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central before returning home next Saturday, Feb. 18 to begin its final home stand of the season.  The Lady Bulldogs will open the four-game stand with Bethune-Cookman on Saturday at 2 p.m.
