SC State Cruise by Clemson in Women’s Basketball

Alston pulled in a game-high 18 points with 15 rebounds in the win

Clemson, S.C.—For the first time since the 1993-94 season the SC State women's basketball team defeated Clemson, picking up the 67-55 non-conference win at Littlejohn Coliseum on the campus of Clemson University.  The Lady Bulldogs improves to 6-2 overall while Clemson falls to 1-7 on the season. This is also the best start for SC State under fifth year head coach Doug Robertson tutelage.

SC State began the game very aggressive scoring the first five points of the contest.  The Lady Bulldogs kept pressing pushing their lead to 12, 16-4, by the 12:16 mark to force Clemson into a timeout.  Out of the timeout the Lady Tigers' offense came to life as they used an 11-5 run over four plus minutes to pull within four, 21-17, with just over seven minutes remaining in the half.  Two free-throws by senior Paris Alston and a traditional three-point play by senior Tiara Knotts at the 6:26 mark helped SC State increase their lead to nine, 26-17.  The Lady Bulldogs owned its biggest lead of the half (18), 34-16, with 3:16 remaining and enjoyed a 10 point lead, 36-26 heading into intermission.

Clemson opened the second half on a 6-2 run to decrease the deficit to six, 38-32, with 17:02 remaining in the game.  The Lady Bulldogs picked up its aggression using a 12-6 run of their own over the next five minutes to increase its lead back to 12, 50-38, with just over 13 minutes left in the contest.  SC State enjoyed its biggest lead of the game (19), 61-42, at the 7:13 mark.  The Lady Tigers managed a mini 11-1 run to pull within nine, 64-55, but ran out of time as the Lady Bulldogs came away with a 67-55 win.

SC State had three players to score in double-figures led by senior Paris Alston who recorded a double-double and game-highs in points and rebounds with 18 and 15, respectively.  Senior Tiara Knotts dropped in 14 including 4-of-4 from free-throw range while senior Cabriel Duren contributed 10 points in win.

Jonquel Jones led three Clemson players in double-figures with 17 points.  Jones also pulled in a team-high 14 rebounds in the game.  Orangeburg, S.C. native Nyilah Jamison-Myers (Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School) scored 16 and Kelly Gramlich added 12 points in the loss.

SC State will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 12, when they travel to Charleston, S.C. to take on Charleston Southern University.  The Lady Bulldogs will host Coastal Carolina next Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 3 p.m. before closing out the calendar year at the University of South Carolina (Dec. 21) and Old Dominion University (Dec. 29).
