SC State Women's Basketball Closes out 2012 with a Loss to Old Dominion University

Norfolk, Va.--SC State closed out the 2012 calendar year with a 79-63 non-conference loss to Old Dominion University. The loss is the second straight for the Lady Bulldogs.

Senior guard Tiara Knotts continued to play well for SC State, who fell to 8-4 on the season.  Knotts, finished with a game-high 21 points.  Senior guard Trinese Fox came off the bench to record her first double-double of the season, 13 points-14 rebounds, including 9-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Old Dominion (9-2) was paced by Shea Kelley with 20 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks.  Jackie Cook was the only other Lady Monarch player to score in double figures with 16.

SC State started the game very aggressive, enjoying a three-point lead twice (5-2 and 8-3) over the first three minutes of the contest.  Both teams offense went stagnant over the next two minutes before Ashley Betz-White hit a three-pointer at the 15:44 mark to tie the game at 8-8.  The Lady Monarchs then went on a 14-3 run over the next three plus minutes to take a 22-11 lead with 12:37 remaining in the half.  SC State's sophomore Kourtney Williams scored finished the layup off a long pass by senior Cabriel Duren to break a three-minute scoring drought.  Old Dominion pushed its lead to 28-17 before the Lady Bulldogs used a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to seven, 30-23, with just over four minutes remaining.  The Lady Monarchs managed to hold on to the five-point lead, 34-29, heading into intermission.

Old Dominion started the second half on a 17-1 run to push its lead to 17, 47-30, with just over 16 minutes remaining in the game.  The Lady Monarchs took a 25 point lead, 64-39, to maintain control of the contest.  SC State managed to pull within 14, 77-63, late in the contest before falling by 16, 79-63.

“We played well and matched their (Old Dominion) intensity in the first half,” said SC State head coach Doug Robertson.  “The second half was another story,” said Robertson. “We did not handle the zone well and could not make a layup.  Old Dominion shot the ball extremely well much better in the second half.

The Lady Bulldogs will have nine days to recoup before returning to action on Tuesday, Jan. 8 when they host Winthrop, in their final non-conference game of the season. Tip-off for Tuesday's contest is set for 12 noon in the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center on the campus of SC State.
