Tiara Knotts poured in a season-high 26 points and senior
Paris Alston added 16 to power South Carolina State to a 94-46 victory over visiting Southern Wesleyan Tuesday night in a non-conference contest.
SC State, which scored its highest point total in two years, improved to 3-1 on the season.
Knotts connected on 9-13 attempts, including 4-5 from 3-point range, while Alston was 8-10 from the field for the Lady Bulldogs, who made 48 percent (36-75) of their shots, including 10-23 from behind the arc.
Also in double figures for Coach Doug Robertson's squad were junior
Brittany Cochran and
Mykala Jones with 11 points each. Cochran also had a team-high eight rebounds for SC State, which enjoyed a 41-30 edge on the glass.
The Warriors were led by Audra Cranston – the only Southern Wesleyan player in double figures -- with 11 points. Laura Johnson and Chelsie added seven points each in the loss, the sixth in seven outings for the Warriors. Ashley Cooper led the visitors on the glass with eight.
SC State raced to a 30-point 49-19 lead at half and was never seriously threaten the rest of the way. Johnson scored the first basket of the second half to pull her team to within 49-21 with 19:07 to play but Knotts hit a 3-pointer and converted a steal into a layup to ignite a 17-3 run that put the host ahead 66-24 at the 15:08 mark. Southern Wesleyan's only points during the spree came on a 3-pointer by Waters with 16:39 to play.
Following another Warrior basket that made the score 66-26 with just under 14 minutes left, the Lady Bulldogs kept up their onslaught, going on a 13-1 run to build a 79-27 advantage and its largest lead of the night with just under eight minutes left. Southern Wesleyan got no closer than 46 points the rest of the way.
SC State resumes its schedule on Wednesday when the Lady Bulldogs host Jacksonville in the first-game of a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m. The SC State and Jacksonville men will meet following the women's contest.
