SC State Lady Bulldogs defeats Southern Wesleyan, 78-56, in its Final Non-Conference Matchup of the Season

Orangeburg, S.C.—The SC State Lady Bulldogs closed out its 2011-12 non-conference campaign with a 78-56 win over Southern Wesleyan.  The contest was the first of three straight home games of for the Lady Bulldogs.

The opened the game exchanging baskets for the first six minutes of the contest.  Southern Wesleyan then took a four point (8-12) with 13:37 remaining.  The Lady Bulldogs picked up their intensity going on a 5-1 run to take the one point advantage, 13-12, lead with 11:35 left in the half.  The Warriors used a mini 3-2 run of their own over the next two minutes to tie the game at 15-15.  The teams would once again exchange baskets before the Lady Bulldogs regained the one point lead, 19-18, with 5:55 remaining in the half.  SC State would increase its lead to nine, 28-19, before enjoying an eight point lead heading into intermission, 28-20.

The second half of the contest belonged solely to SC State.  The Lady Bulldogs increased their half-time lead to 17 by the 16:04 mark.  SC State enjoyed its biggest lead of 30 with 6:43 remaining before going on to capture the 22 point win, 78-56.

SC State (6-7) had three players to finish in double-digits led by Paris Alston and Tiara Knotts with 15.  Cabriel Duren scored 10 points with seven rebounds and eight assists while Tiana Hemphill pulled in a team-high 11 rebounds while contributing seven points in the victory.

Southern Wesleyan was led in scoring by Janaye Gillard with 26 points. Ashley Cooper recorded a double-double, 15 points-13 rebounds as the Warriors fell to 3-9 on the season.

The Lady Bulldogs will resume Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play this Saturday, Jan. 7 when they host Morgan State.  Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
