SC State Closeout its Three-Game Road-Swing with a 65-76 Loss to Savannah State

Savannah, Ga.—The SC State women's basketball team closed out its three-game road-swing with a 65-76 loss to Savannah State.  With the loss the Lady Bulldogs falls to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in the MEAC.

SC State began the game very aggressive jumping out to an 8-2 lead and forcing Savannah State into a quick timeout by the 17:20 mark.  The Lady Bulldogs maintained its intensity over the next three-plus minutes, increasing its lead to 10, 14-4 with 13:50 remaining in the half.  Savannah State picked up their intensity using a 10-2 run to pull within two, 16-14, with a little over eight minutes left in the half.  The Lady Tigers stayed within two points over the next three minutes before tying the game at 18-18 with 6:05 remaining. The Lady Bulldogs quickly regained the two-point lead off two made free-throws by Cabriel Duren.  Savannah State took its first lead of the game, 21-20, off a three-pointer by Zadous Pollard with 2:22 remaining in the half.  The Lady Tigers enjoyed a three-point lead heading into the half up 25-22.

Savannah State opened the second half with an 11-4 run to increase its lead to 10, 36-26, with 16:12 remaining in the contest.  The Lady Tigers increased its lead to 15, 45-30, with 13:52 remaining before SC State's offense came back to life.  The Lady Bulldogs used a 7-2 run to pull within 10, 47-37, with 12:23 remaining in the contest.  The Lady Tigers maintained a double-digit lead over the next six minutes, before a traditional three-point play by the Lady Bulldogs' Tracey Flowers cut the deficit to nine, 61-52, with 6:22 remaining in the game. SC State kept up the defensive intensity which turned into offensive output.  The Lady Bulldogs outscored Savannah State, 8-2 over the next 3:02 to cut the deficit to three, 63-60, and came as close as one, 65-64, with 2:29 remaining but could not get over the hump.  Savannah State closed the game on a 12-1 run to capture the 65-76 victory.

Junior Paris Alston scored 12 of her team-high 14 points in the second half.  Alston had a balanced game as she pulled in a game-high seven rebounds with one block.  Junior Trinese Fox scored 13 and junior Tiana Hemphill came off the bench to contribute 10 points and six rebounds.  Senior Tracey Flowers had a solid outing with seven points and five rebounds in the loss.

Savannah State (7-11, 2-5 MEAC) was led by Ezinne Kalu who scored a game-high 23 points.  Jasmine Kirkland scored 16 while Jasmine Norman, Zadous Pollard and Rikiah Gatling each contributed 10 in the contest.  Gatling pulled in a team-high seven rebounds for the Lady Tigers.

SC State will have eight days off from competition before returning home for a mini two-game stint beginning next Monday, Jan. 30 when they host the Lady Bison of Howard University.  The Lady Bulldogs will then host these same Lady Tigers on Saturday, Feb. 4 before hitting the road on Saturday, Feb. 11 to take on the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T.
