SC State Opens Three-Game Road-Swing with 71-60 Win over Bethune-Cookman

Daytona Beach, Fla.—The SC State women's basketball team opened its three-game road-swing with a 71-60 win over Bethune-Cookman.  The matchup, played in Moore Gymnasium on the campus of Bethune-Cookman, was the Lady Bulldogs third win in four games.

SC State (8-8, 3-2 MEAC) opened the game with a 9- 2.  Bethune-Cookman rebounded quickly, going on a 9-2 run of its own to tie the game at 11 with 13:34 remaining in the half. The teams exchanged the lead over the next five minutes with SC State taking a four-point advantage, 16-20, with just over eight minutes remaining.  Bethune-Cookman went on yet another run, 8-4, to tie the game at 24-24 with 5:49 remaining.  The Lady Bulldogs closed the half on a14-7 run to take the 38-31 lead into intermission.

The Lady Bulldogs maintained their intensity to start the second half, as they used an 8-2 run to increase its lead to 13, 46-33 by the 16:47 mark.  SC State remained aggressive pushing its lead to 16, 50-34 with 13:13 remaining in the game. Bethune-Cookman picked up its intensity, going on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 13, 55-42 with 8:08 remaining.  The Lady Bulldogs then used an 8-0 run to regain control of the contest, pushing its 21, 63-42 the biggest of the game.  Bethune-Cookman would not be outdone as they used a 12-3 run to pull within nine, 65-56 with just over two minutes remaining.  SC State managed to hold off the threating Lady Wildcats, outscoring Bethune-Cookman, 6-4 over the final two minutes en route to the 71-60 victory.

Juniors Paris Alston, Cabriel Duren and Tiara Knotts each scored a game-high 16 points to lead SC State.  Trinese Fox scored eight points and Tracey Flowers scored seven points while pulling in a game-high 10 rebounds in the victory.  Flowers and Duren also had two blocks each in the contest.

Bethune-Cookman was led in the contest by Jasmine Elum and Whitney King with 13 and 12, respectively.  Demetria Frank had six points and six rebounds as the Lady Wildcats fell to 4-1 overall and 1-3 in the MEAC.

SC State will remain in the Sunshine State as they travel to Tallahassee, Fla. on Monday (Jan. 16) to take on the Lady Rattlers of Florida A&M.  The Lady Bulldogs will close out its three-game road-swing next Saturday (Jan. 21) when they travel to Savannah, Ga. to take on the Lady Tigers of Savannah State.  SC State next home game will be Monday, Jan. 31 when they host the Lady Bison of Howard University.
