Daytona Beach, Fla.—SC State turned a four-point half-time deficit into a four-point victory as they defeated Bethune-Cookman, 64-60, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's basketball contest at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. The victory is the first road win of the 2010-11 season for the Lady Bulldogs.
Bethune Cookman opened the game on a 16-2 run over the first six minutes. SC State then used a 14-0 run to tie the game at 16-16 with less than nine minutes remaining. The teams exchanged baskets over the next four minutes before a jumper by the Lady Wildcats Amanda Hairston at the 4:10 mark began an 11-0 run which gave Bethune-Cookman the 34-23 lead with just over one minute remaining in the half. SC State closed the half with a 7-0 run to go into the locker room down by four, 34-30, at the half.
The second of the contest was one of runs. SC State began the half with a 5-0 run to take the one point lead, 35-34, at the 17:10 mark. Bethune-Cookman used a 7-0 run over the next three minutes to take a six point lead, 41-35, with just over 14 minutes remaining. Each team put together a couple of mini runs over the next 12 minutes before a three-pointer by
Tiara Knotts gave the Lady Bulldogs a 58-55 advantage and the lead for good. Bethune-Cookman would pull within one point, 57-58, but could not get any closer. SC State increased its lead to five points, 57-62, before pulling out the four point victory, 64-60.
SC State (9-16, 5-10 MEAC) had four players to score in double-figures led by senior guard
Whitney Wiley with a game-high 20 points. Sophomore
Paris Alston contributed 13 points-eight rebounds while
Tiara Knotts and
Fannie Goodwin added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Goodwin also pulled in seven rebounds in the victory.
Bethune-Cookman (12-13, 5-10 MEAC) was led by Amanda Hairston with 17 points-15 rebounds. The Lady Wildcats had three players in all to record double-digits as Jasmine Elum scored 15 and Sarah Bolden contributed 11 points in the contest. Bolden and Jasmine Daniels pulled in seven rebounds each in the loss.
The Lady Bulldogs will remain in the sunshine state as they travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on the Lady Rattlers of Florida A&M this Monday, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. This will be the final MEAC contest of the season for SC State. The Lady Bulldogs will close out its 2010-11 regular season next Thursday, March 3 when they travel to Durham, N.C. to take on the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central.
