SC State Drops Non-Conference Women’s Basketball Matchup to Winthrop

Knotts recorded her fourth straight double-digit scoring game.

Rock Hill, S.C.—SC State second half surge not enough as they fell to Winthrop, 59-67, in a non-conference women's basketball matchup.  The contest was the fifth straight road game for the Lady Bulldogs who will close out its six-game road swing on Wednesday (Dec. 14) at the University of South Carolina.

SC State opened the game scoring the first five points.  Winthrop used an 8-3 run to tie the game at 8-8 with just over 16 minutes remaining.  Winthrop took control of the game continuing their run to take a four point lead, 16-12, with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first half.  The Lady Eagles pushed its lead to 10, 22-12 with a little over nine minutes left in the half. The Lady Bulldogs managed to cut the lead to six, 38-32, with 1:52 remaining.  Winthrop increased its lead to 14, 46-32, heading into the half.

SC State began the second half as aggressive as the first scoring the first seven points of the half, to cut deficit to 46-39 by the 16:47 mark. Winthrop managed to maintain a seven-point margin over the next five minutes leading 53-46 at the 11:20 mark.  The Lady Bulldogs continued to push pulling within three points, 57-54, with 7:37 remaining in the contest.  SC State late game push continued, as they cut the deficit to one, 57-56 with just under four minutes remaining.  SC State tied the game for the first time since the 16:15 mark of the first half at 59-59.  Winthrop regained the lead off a three-pointer by Samiya Wright with 4:40 remaining in the ball game.  The Lady Eagles closed the game on an 8-0 run to capture the 67-59 victory.

“We were right in the game we just had some missed opportunities,” said head coach Doug Robertson.  “We can't miss 10 free-throws and expect to win the contest.  I think once we get a handle on the small things we will be ok.”

Tiara Knotts recorded her fourth straight double-digit contest as she led the way with 13 points.  Paris Alston continued to play solid as she dropped in nine points and pulled in eight rebounds.  Trinese Fox contributed nine points while Cabriel Duren scored seven points with five rebounds as SC State dropped to 3-5 on the season.

Winthrop, who was led by Samiya Wright with 18, improved to 3-5 on the season.  Dequesha McClanahan scored 15 and Diana Choibekova contributed 14 points in the contest.  Mary Hathaway pulled in a team-high eight rebounds in the victory.


The Lady Bulldogs will close out its six-game road-swing on Wednesday, (Dec. 14) when they travel to Columbia, S.C. to take on the University of South Carolina.  SC State will host UNC-Asheville, next Monday, Dec. 19 at 6 p.m.  Due to renovations to floor in the Smith-Hammond-Memorial Center, the Lady Bulldogs home court, the game will be played at the Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Physical Education Center (Tullis Arena) which is adjacent to SC State.
