SC State Falls Short To Presbyterian 53-50

ORANGEBURG, SC – Junior forward Tiana Hemphill grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds and tossed in eight points, but it wasn't enough as South Carolina State dropped a tough 53-50 decision to Presbyterian College Saturday at S-H-M Center.
        The Lady Bulldogs was also led by junior guards Trinese Fox with 13 points, and Cabriel Duren chipped in 10 in the loss. Dria David and Mariah Pietrowski each had 12 for Presbyterian.
     “We just didn't make some shots when they counted,” said SC State head coach Doug Robertson. “We have to keep working at it and improve in some areas.”
      SC State jumped out to a quick 11-0 lead off a layup by forward Tiana Hemphill at the 14:19 mark. Presbyterian sparked a 17-8 run off a 3-pointer by Chelsa Parker to pull with two, 19-17 with 6:28 left in the first-half.
       The Bulldogs lead jumped to six, 27-21 off back-to-back layups by guards Tiara Knotts and Kourtney Williams with 2:32 remaining in the half. SC State closed out the half with a 29-24 lead.
      A jumper by Fox followed by a free-throw by forward Paris Alston gave SC State their biggest lead of the second-half seven, 36-29 at the 14:51 mark.     
       Presbyterian sparked a 10-0 run off a 3-pointer by Dria David to take the lead for the first time of the night 39-36 with 9:27 left in the contest.
       Alston dropped in a pair of free-throws with 7:34 left to pull the Lady Bulldogs within one, 40-41. SC State committed 14 turnovers down the stretch that proved to be the deciding factor in the game at the end.
        Duren's layup followed by a pair of free-throws by Fox pulled SC State within one, 50-51 with 0:40 seconds left in the game. Junior center Mariah Pietrowski sealed the victory hitting a driving layup with 0:14 seconds left to give Presbyterian a three point lead, 53-50.
        Despite the loss, the Lady Bulldogs outrebounded Presbyterian 45-25 only to fall short. Paris Alston finished nine points and seven rebounds, while Kristen Stevens chipped in 11 and Sherece Smith added 10 in the victory.
       SC State will return to action on Saturday Nov. 26 against Charleston Southern in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
