Second Half Surge Pushes Norfolk State over State SC State in Women’s Basketball

Lady Bulldogs Remains Winless on the Road

Goodwin scored 14 points and pulled in 6 rebounds in loss
Norfolk, Va.—Norfolk State overcame an eight point half-time deficit to defeat SC State, 73-65 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match-up in Echols Hall. With the loss, the Lady Bulldogs remains winless on the road in the 2010-11 campaign.

SC State, (6-10, 2-4 MEAC), played one of their most well balanced first halves of the season which included hitting 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. The Lady Bulldogs and Spartans exchanged baskets over the first nine minutes of the contest with the score tied at 10 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the half. A three-pointer by sophomore Lauren Johnson at the 11:05 gave SC State the 13-10 lead and control of the first half. SC State increased its lead to 10, 27-17, at the 2:50 mark before heading into intermission with an eight point advantage, 25-33.

Norfolk State, (8-8, 1-5 MEAC) used a 21-12 run at the start of the second half to take a one point lead (45-46) at the 12:27 mark. SC State regained the lead (47-46) off a Whitney Wiley layup. The teams exchanged baskets over the next minute before a three-pointer by the Spartans Tyisha Bridges knotted the game at 49 with just over 10 minutes remaining. The Spartans then went on a 5-0 run at the 9:37 mark to take the 54-49 advantage. Norfolk State never relinquished its lead as they increased its lead to eight (63-55) with just over five minutes remaining. The Lady Bulldogs managed to pull within three, 68-65, but could not get any closer eventually falling by eight, 73-65.

Despite the loss, the Lady Bulldogs had three players to score in double-figures led by Whitney Wiley with 17. Fannie Goodwin dropped in 14 points and a team high six rebounds and Tracey Flowers contributed 11 points in the loss.

Whitney Long led Norfolk State with 24 points. The Spartans also had three players to record double-figures. In addition to Long, Tyisha Bridges dropped in 13 and Rae Corbo added 12 in. Marian Brooks and Batavia Owens each pulled in six rebounds in the victory.

SC State will return home for a two-game stint beginning this Saturday, Jan. 29 when they host Bethune-Cookman. The Lady Bulldogs will then host Florida A&M next Monday, Jan. 31 before returning to the road. Saturday's contest is set for a 2 p.m. start while next Monday's contest will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. Both games will be played in the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center on the campus of SC State.
