SC State Falls to Coppin State in Women’s Basketball

Hemphill pulled in 10 rebounds in the loss
Baltimore, Md.—Senior guard Whitney Wiley scored a team-high 13 points as SC State fell to Coppin State, 84-51, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest at the Physical Education Complex. The loss was the second straight conference loss for the Lady Bulldogs.
    SC State (6-8, 2-2 MEAC) began the game very sluggish as they found themselves in a 15 points hole, 22-7, by the 12:59 mark of the first half. The Lady Bulldogs picked up its intensity and used a 14-7 run to cut the deficit to eight, 21-29, with 4:58 remaining in the half. Coppin State (5-10, 2-2 MEAC) regained control of the game, closing the half on a 14-4 run to enjoy an 18 point lead, 43-25, at intermission.
    Coppin State maintained its intensity to start the second half, increasing their margin to 24, 51-27, by the 13:52 mark. SC State went on a 7-0 run over the next minute and a half to pull within 17, 51-34, but could not get any closer. Coppin State did not let up as they went up by as many as 26 with just over four minutes remaining (74-48) en route to the 33 point victory.
    Wiley was the only SC State player to score in double-figures as Trinese Fox scored nine and Tracey Flowers contributed eight points in the contest. Tiana Hemphill led the team in rebounding with a game-high 10 boards in the loss.
    Jeanine Manley led Coppin State recording a double-double, 24 points-10 rebounds. The Lady Eagles had three players to record double-digit points as Crystal Whittington dropped in 17 and Shawntae Payne contributed 14 points in the victory.
    SC State will try to regroup before heading back on the road this Saturday, Jan. 22 when travel to Greensboro, N.C. to face the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T. The Lady Bulldogs will face Norfolk State next Monday, Jan. 24 before returning home next Saturday, Jan. 29 to host Bethune-Cookman.
