Baltimore, MD—The SC State women's basketball team won its second straight contest as they defeated Coppin State, 69-53, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match-up. The win over the Lady Eagles marks the first time since the 2002-03 season that the SC State has defeated Coppin.
Coppin State (8-14, 4-7 MEAC) jumped out to a five point lead (7-2) in the first two minutes of the game. SC State (8-15, 3-8 MEAC) quickly regrouped and went on 13-0 run to jump ahead by five (14-9) with just under 13 minutes remaining in the half. The Lady Bulldogs controlled the remainder of the half, going up by as many as 12, 23-35, with just over two minutes remaining. SC State enjoyed a 10 point half-time lead, 37-27.
The Lady Bulldogs maintained its intensity to begin the second half increasing their lead to 21 points (53-32) midway through the half. Coppin State put together a mini 6-0 run over the next minute and a half to pull within 15, 53-38, but could not get any closer eventually falling by 16, 69-53.
Junior Whitney Wiley led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 22. Sophilia Hipps contributed 17 points and seven rebounds in victory. Freshman Tiara Knotts also pulled in seven rebounds in the winning effort.
Coppin State was led in scoring and rebounding by Jeanine Manley and Crystal Whittington with 19 and 13 respectively. Lakeytah Irving was the only other Lady Eagle to score in double-figures with 10.
The Lady Bulldogs will look to make it three in a row when they travel to Northwest Baltimore on Monday (Feb. 15) to take on the Lady Bears of Morgan State. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
