Dover, DE—Brittany Washington, who led all scorers with 18 points, made a layup with 7.2 seconds left to lift Delaware State to a 51-50 win over SC State Monday in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) battle in Memorial Hall. The contest concluded an eight-game road swing for the Lady Bulldogs.
Following Washington's basket SC State took a timeout with 5.7 left on the clock to set up a potential winning play.
The inbounds pass went to sophomore Whitney Wiley who went the length of the floor but her winning layup attempt was just off the rim as time expired.
The first half, which ended with Delaware State enjoying a 24-20 lead, was closely contest with five lead changes and three ties. SC State's biggest lead was at 10-5 when senior Sophilia Hipps got a layup at 9:58 of the period. The host's biggest advantage was four points, the margin it held at the half.
Freshman Tiana Hemphill had her best game of the season with 10 points and eight rebounds to lead the Lady Bulldogs. Wiley contributed nine, including two free-throws that gave Coach Doug Robertson's team a 50-44 edge with 29.9 left in the game.
The Lady Hornets won their second in a row to climb to 3-12 and 1-1 in league games.
SC State will open its home MEAC schedule on Saturday, Jan. 16 when they host the Lady Bears of Morgan State. Tip-off for the contest is set for a 4 p.m. start. The Lady Bulldogs will then host Coppin State in a 2 p.m. contest on Monday, Jan. 18.
