DAY 1 LEADERS DAY 1 RESULTS
BURLINGTON, N.C. — South Carolina State women's golf opened play Monday at the Elon Women's Invitational, with Yaíza Fernandez leading the Bulldogs through the opening round at Alamance Country Club.
Fernandez turned in SC State's best round of the day, carding a 7-over-par 78 on the par-71, 6,225-yard layout. Her performance placed her in a tie for 49th individually heading into the final day of competition.
Jane Mhonda followed with a 9-over 80 to finish the opening round tied for 60th, while
Alyssa Hardy posted an 81 (+10) and sits tied for 65th. Alyssa Gonzalez rounded out the Bulldogs' scoring with an 85 (+14).
South Carolina State combined for a team score of 324 (+40), placing the Bulldogs 14th in the 15-team field after the opening 18 holes. The Bulldogs finished Day 1 two strokes behind USC Upstate and held a 10-shot advantage over Coppin State.
Host Elon grabbed the early team lead with a 2-under 282, followed by Howard at 286 (+2) and Wofford at 291 (+7). Elon's Emma Hansen and Wofford's Gabbie Crowfoot share the individual lead after both fired opening-round 68s, 3 under par.
The Bulldogs will look to build on Monday's opening-round performance as the Elon Women's Invitational continues Tuesday at Alamance Country Club. The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes and an 8:30 a.m. ET shotgun start.
