Women’s Basketball Suffer Yet Another MEAC Setback

ORANGEBURG, S.C.  —  South Carolina State women's basketball dropped another tough MEAC league contest 73–47 on Monday (Feb.16) afternoon in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play versus visiting Morgan State inside Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

South Carolina State (5-19, MEAC) briefly held a 2-0 lead on Janiah Hinton's early basket, but Morgan State responded with a 17-4 run midway through the first quarter and never trailed again. The Bears led 21-14 after the opening period and maintained steady pressure throughout the contest.

Jael Butler scored 16 points and Morgan State (4-22, MEAC) outscored South Carolina State 28–6 in the third quarter to break open a competitive game and take full control. The Bears led 38-32 at halftime before their decisive run pushed the margin to 66-38 entering the fourth quarter.

Shaunice Reed paced South Carolina State with 17 points, hitting three 3-pointers, and Iemyiah Harris added 13 points. Heaven Harper finished with five points and four rebounds for the Bulldogs, who shot 32.1 percent from the floor and struggled offensively in the second half.

Morgan State capitalized on South Carolina State's miscues, scoring 23 points off turnovers, and adding 19 fast-break points. The Bears also controlled the glass, outrebounding the Bulldogs 40-32.

South Carolina State returns to conference action Wednesday (Feb.18) versus North Carolina Central looking to rebound from the loss inside Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
