Johnson Named MEAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

ORANGEBURG, SC—Sophomore point guard Jayden Johnson has been selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week the league announced presented by Wells Fargo 

Johnson (G, 6-1, 165, So., Brooklyn, N.C.) delivered a clutch performance last week, knocking down the game-winning jumper with one second remaining to lift South Carolina State to a dramatic one-point victory over Howard. In the win, Johnson scored 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting, while adding three rebounds and four assists. He followed up with a 25-point outing against Tennessee, recording three rebounds, three assists, and one steal in just 26 minutes of action. 

Others earning honors were, North Carolina Central forward Khouri Carvey earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, and Coppin State forward Nelson Lamizana was selected as Rookie of the Week.. 
 
Other Top Performers 

  • Owen Bronston Jr. (South Carolina State) totaled 15 points, six rebounds, and one assist in games against Tennessee and Howard. 

  • Devon Ellis (Norfolk State) recorded 18 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and one steal versus North Carolina Central. 

  • Ose Okojie (Howard) posted back-to-back double-figure scoring efforts with 18 points against Northwestern and 13 points versus South Carolina State. 

  • Dorion Staples (Maryland Eastern Shore) finished with 16 points, two rebounds, two steals, one block, and one assist against Morgan State. 

  • Cedric Taylor III (Howard) registered a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds, along with three assists, three steals, and three blocks versus South Carolina State. 

  • Taj Thweatt (Coppin State) scored a game-high 13 points with five rebounds and one assist in a 53-51 win over Delaware State. 

  • Miles Webb (Delaware State) totaled 26 points and 23 rebounds, with one assist and one block, in games against Rutgers and Coppin State. 

  • Alfred Worrell Jr. (Morgan State) poured in a game-high 32 points, shooting 8-for-11 from three-point range, while adding six rebounds and one steal against Penn State Brandywine.
