ORANGEBURG, SC — Howard held off a late South Carolina State surge to earn a 68–64 road league victory Saturday (Jan.3) afternoon inside Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
South Carolina State (3–13, 0–1 MEAC) was paced by an outstanding performance from Iemyiah Harris, who poured in a game-high 28 points on 9-of-23 shooting, including five 3-pointers. Heaven Harper recorded 8 points and 7 rebounds, while Feliah Greer tallied 7 points and 10 boards.
Zennia Thomas led the Bison (11–6, 1–0 MEAC) with a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds while shooting 6 of 10 from the field and 7 of 10 from the free-throw line in the win.
Howard relied on a balanced attack and clutch defense in the final minutes after trailing by as many as eight in the first half. The Bison outscored the Bulldogs 35–29 in the second half, keyed by aggressive rebounding and strong inside play from Thomas and Nile Miller, who finished with nine points, seven rebounds, and four steals.
After trailing 22–17 at the end of the first quarter, Howard tightened defensively, limiting S.C. State to just 10 points in the third period. The Bison then used a 20-point fourth quarter to surge ahead. Henigan's late basket gave Howard a 58–57 lead, and the Bison never looked back, scoring 10 of the final 13 points.
Howard shot 40 percent (22 of 55) from the field and 60 percent (18 of 30) from the line, while the Bulldogs hit 42.1 percent (24 of 57) and 76.9 percent (10 of 13) from the stripe.
