ORANGEBURG, S.C. — With 11 lead changes and five (5) ties throughout the game, Norfolk State managed to hold on in the second half to secure an 89-82 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over South Carolina State Saturday (Jan.17) inside Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
South Carolina State only shot 18-of-22 from the charity stripe to Norfolk State's 37-of-47.
South Carolina State (3-16, 2-2 MEAC) was paced by
Jayden Johnson with 16 points, five assists and two steals.
James Morrow added 15 points for the Bulldogs, and
Noah Treadwell contributed nine.
Anthony McComb III scored 19 points for the Spartans. McComb, who went 14 for 15 from the free throw line, led Norfolk State (8-12, 2-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), while Elijah Jamison added 14 points and five rebounds.
The teams traded runs in the opening half, but Norfolk State steadily pulled away in the second, capitalizing on timely scoring. South Carolina State mounted late pressure, but the Spartans were able to maintain the lead down the stretch, sealing the win with free throws and clutch baskets in the final minutes.
NEXT UP: South Carolina State returns to action Tuesday (Jan.20) versus Mid Atlantic Christian in non-conference play at 7 p.m. inside Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
