BALTIMORE — South Carolina State men's basketball dropped a tough 72-67 setback on the road Saturday (Jan.10) to host Morgan State inside Hill Field House.
Jayden Johnson led South Carolina State (2–15, 1–1) with 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting and
Florian Tenebay had a 10-rebound, 10-assist double-double.
James Morrow added seven points and seven rebounds for the Bulldogs, who shot 50.9% from the floor but went just 9 of 19 at the free-throw line.
South Carolina State led 34–32 at halftime and pushed its largest lead to nine at the 10:36 mark of the first half. The Bulldogs still led 56–55 with 5:04 remaining before Morgan State surged in front. Lawson and Davis combined for 11 points in the final stretch as the Bears gained a six-point cushion with under two minutes to play.
The Bulldogs outscored Morgan State 42–36 in the paint and 16–10 in second-chance points, but the Bears generated 17 fast-break points and converted 20 points off turnovers.
Elijah Davis scored 18 points for Morgan State, while Rob Lawson added 17 points and Christian Meeks had 10 for the Bears (4–12, 1–1 MEAC).
South Carolina State returns to action on Monday (Jan. 12) when they take on Coppin State in a pivotal Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference showdown in Baltimore, MD. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
