SC State Earns Gold in Three Events Saturday at MEAC Track & Field Championships; Hopkins Shares Outstanding Field Performer Honors

NORFOLK, VA – South Carolina State, Saturday, earned gold medals in three events on the final day of the 2025 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, with Areyanna Scott winning the women's javelin (42.20m, 138-05 ft.), Robert Carter capturing the men's javelin (56.11m, 188-01 ft.), and Michael Hopkins the pole vault (4.86m, 15-11.25 ft.).

Hopkins, who finished second in the Decathlon on Friday, earned a total of 18 points for SC State and shared the league's Outstanding Field Performer. The honor was the second in as many seasons for Coach Donald Cooper's men, as Bulldog senior Dexter Ratliff earned the recognition in 2024.

Scott's throw in the javelin was a season-best for the Summerville senior and also moved her to second in the HBCU rankings in the event.

Overall, the SC State men were fifth in the team standings with 81 points, while the Lady Bulldogs compiled 50 points to earn sixth in the women's competition.

The Norfolk State men and Howard women captured their fourth consecutive titles each, leading the way with 227 and 292 points, respectively.

In addition to Hopkins, Scott and Carter capturing gold medals, a number of other SC State competitors scored points for Coach Donald Cooper's teams.

In the men's competition, Jalen Alleyne was fourth in the 100 meters; Isaiah Vertus, fifth in the 400 meters; Jameli Thomas, Alexander Hollimon and Bryce Wilson fourth, sixth and seventh, respectively, in the men's 110m hurdles; Isaiah Johnson and Keondre Dickson were fifth and eighth, respectively, in the javelin; Josiah Rayford and Jaden Barker sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 400m hurdles; and the 4x400m relay team, fifth.

Among the Lady Bulldogs, the 4x400m relay team (Angelica Frederick, Emani Asbury, TyQwasia Williams and Makenzie Williams) made a podium appearance with a third place finish; Jourdon Cooper and Sydney Cooper finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the women's pole vault; TyQwasia Williams, sixth in both the 400 meters and the 400m hurdles; Kiera Smalls, eighth in the 100m hurdles; and the women's 4x100m relay team, fourth.
