SC State Women 6th, Men 7th at MEAC Track Championship; 15 Qualify for Saturday’s Finals

ORANGEBURG, SC – Following the completion of eight of 21 events at the 2025 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Norfolk, VA. Friday, the SC State women have compiled 17 points and are sixth in the team standings, while the men have amassed 25 points and are seventh.

The Norfolk State men, four-times defending champion, leads the men's competition with 84 points, followed by NC Central in second with 62. The Norfolk State women lead the female competition with 81 points, followed by four-time defending champion Howard.

Also, the SC State men and women sent a combined 15 qualifiers to Saturday's finals, which get underway at 10 a.m.

Michael Hopkins was the top finisher for Coach Don Cooper on Friday, grabbing second in the Decathlon with 6458 points and earning eight points for the Bulldogs. Teammates Isaiah Johnson and Christian Washington were third and fourth, respectively, earning six and five points in the event.

Also scoring for SC State on Friday were Jourdon Cooper (5 pts.), Sydney Cooper (4 pts.) and Azaiyah Phillips (3 pts.) in the women's Heptathlon, finishing fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively; Erick Hill in the men's long jump, two points; Kameron Sutton, in the 3,000 steeplechase, one point; and Robert Carter in the shot put, one point. On Thursday, the opening day of the three-day Championships, Kennedy Spears was fourth in the women's high jump to earn five points for the SC State women.

Earning spots in Saturday's finals on Friday were three Bulldogs in the 110m hurdles - Bryce Wilson, Andrew Hollimon and Jameli Thomas. Also, Isaiah Vertus in the 400 meters, Jaden Barker and Josiah Rayford in the 400m hurdles, Jalen Alleyne in the 100 meters, TyQwasia Williams in the women's 400m hurdles, Williams and Angela Frederick in the 400 meters, and Kiera Smalls in the 100m hurdles. 

Cooper's teams will also be in the finals of the men's and women's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.  

ABOUT SC STATE ATHLETICS South Carolina State University is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level intercollegiate athletic program. The university currently fields teams in 14 sports: women's volleyball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor track & field, softball, men's and women's outdoor track and field, women's soccer and football with all teams competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), except for women's soccer.
