Hopkins Earns MEAC Weekly Men’s Track & Field Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Apr. 9, 2025 — South Carolina State junior Michael Hopkins was named Men's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Field Athlete of the Week the league announced Wednesday (April. 9).

Hopkins (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) captured first place in the Decathlon with a South Carolina State school-record 6550 points at the Embry-Riddle Running Element/Multis. His victory makes him the MEAC leader in the event. Hopkins finished first in the 100m dash (10.77) and the pole vault (4.70m) while registering top three finishes in the 400m race (50.03), 1500m run (4:42.49), 110m hurdles (16.11) and high jump (1.73m).  

Others earning honors were, North Carolina Central freshman Cashmere James was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's Track Athlete of the Week. 

 James (Fr., Wilmington, N.C.) competed in four events at the VertKlasse Meeting, capturing 1st in the 400m race clocking in at 46.59 and setting personal records in the 100m dash running a time of 10.56 and 200m dash clocking in at 20.92. 
 
Other Top Performers  
  • Carl Drakes (CSU) won both the 100m with a 10.43 time and anchored his team in the 4x100m relay that finished with a time of 40.34 at the Towson Senior Twilight Open. 
  • Marian Drazan (DSU) placed first in the 1500m at the UD Invitational setting a DSU program record with a time of 3:55.27. 
  • Christopher Johnson (DSU) finished second in discus (44.18m) and third in shot put (16.35m) at the University of Delaware Invitational. 
  • Delano Lawrence (UMES) secured his second discus victory of the season with a season-best throw of 50.56m at the Norfolk State Invitational. 
  • Malcolm Forbes (NCCU) jumped a personal-best 14.71 meters in the triple jump to finish fourth and also registering a 6.45m mark in the long jump. 
  • Troy McWilliams (NSU) placed first in the hammer throw with a mark of 55.71m and finished 10th in the discus with a 39.37m toss. 
  • Premier Wynn (NSU) won the 200m dash at the NSU Invitational with a time of 20.91. 
  • Bryce Wilson (SCSU) won the 110m hurdles at the Embry-Riddle Running Element/Multis with a time of 14.41.
