MEN, WOMEN TIE FOR FOURTH & SIXTH, RESPECTIVELY, AT MEAC INDOOR TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS

HOPKINS EARN MOST OUTSTANDING FIELD ATHLETE HONORS

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The South Carolina State men picked up another 51 points and the women added 24 more on Monday (02-24-25), the final day of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championship at the Virginia Beach Sports Center to finish tied for fourth and sixth, respectively, in the eight-team field.

Coach Don Cooper's men amassed 72 points to tie Delaware State, while the women finished with 42 points, tying Maryland Eastern Shore.

The Norfolk State men rolled up 192 points and the Howard women 256 as each earned their fourth consecutive title.

Although both SC State teams fell short of the goals set by Cooper for the Championships – 100 points for the men and 50 points for the women -- there were several positives for the university.

Bulldog junior Michael Hopkins was named the Outstanding Field Athlete in the men's competition after winning the pole vault and finishing second in the Heptathlon. He was joined on the MEAC All-Conference first-team by senior Jourdon Cooper, who won the women's Pentathlon. Also earning All-Conference honors were Lady Bulldog high jumper Kennedy Spears, who finished second in the high jump and hurdler Bryce Williams, who was third in the 60m hurdles. In addition, several team members had personal record performances at the meet.

"We obviously expected to do better," Cooper said, "but we congratulate our athletes who stepped up and did well. (Michael) Hopkins, and Jourdon (Cooper) are saluted for their gold-medal performances and first-team All-MEAC honors, along with (Kennedy) Spears and Bryce (Wilson), who also earned All-MEAC honors.

"We will meet with our teams in a couple of days to evaluate where we are and make efforts to improve going forward."

The SC State outdoor track and field campaign gets underway March 22 at the University of South Carolina.
