ORANGEBURG, SC—Three Bulldogs tossed in double figures with
Omar Croskey leading the way with a team-high 18 points, three (3) rebounds, two (2) steals, but it wasn't enough as South Carolina State dropped a heartbreaking 76-75 win over Delaware State Saturday (Jan.4) inside Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
The Bulldogs (8-10 overall, 2-1 MEAC) led by as many three, 75-72 with 0:15 seconds remaining in the second half. A pair of free-throws by Robert Smith pulled the Hornets within one 74-75 with 0:8 second remaining.
A costly turnover gave the Hornets possession with 0:07 seconds remaining, which led to a Kaseem Watson driving layout in the paint to secure to 76-75 win over the Bulldogs.
Sophomore guard
Mitchell Taylor finished with 16 points and three rebounds, while
Davion Everett added 11 points and four (4) rebounds in the loss.
The Hornets (8-9 overall, 1-2 MEAC) were led by Kaseem Watson with 23 points and Robert Smith with 21 on the day.
Despite the loss, SCSU led in several categories including points in the paint (36-30), points off turnovers (15-7), second chance points (12-9), bench points (28-20), fast break points (9-5) and rebounds 27-24.
NEXT UP: South Carolina State resume to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play in a showdown with UMES on Monday (Jan.13) in the second of a doubleheader beginning at 7:30 pm inside Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
