ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State will host its first home track and field meet in twelve (12) seasons Saturday (Apr. 13) beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Lorry H. Dawkins Track Facility. The Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Classic is being held in memory of the former Lady Bulldog track standout, who was among nine persons killed in a mass shooting at (Mother) Emanuel AME Church in Charleston June 17, 2015.
Coleman-Singleton, a New Jersey native, was a member of SC State track teams from 1987-1981 and participated on the 1987-88 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship team. Members of her family and some of her then-teammates are scheduled to be in attendance at the meet, which has free admission. Attendees are urged to bring along lawn chairs.
Sixteen colleges and universities and two track clubs are scheduled to participate in the meet, in which SC State head coach Donald Cooper – a SC State Hall of Famer – and school administrators will also recognize track and field senior student-athletes.
